An outdoor poster case is a sealed, lockable frame for a printed poster on an external wall — building entrances, notice walls, sports grounds, school gates. It exists because a poster taped to a wall lasts one rainy night. The body is anodised aluminium, the front is transparent plexiglass rather than glass, the back panel is PVC, and the door closes on a rubber gasket and a key lock.
A1 is the entrance format: one poster, read by someone who has already walked up to the door. A0 is for a wall seen from across a forecourt, a car park or a playground, where the reader is further away and moving. Judge it by the distance the poster is read from, not by the wall you have available. A poster case that is too big for its content looks empty; one that is too small for its viewing distance simply does not get read, and a locked case with an unread poster in it is an expensive noticeboard.
Everything else on an outdoor case is comfort; these two decide whether it works. The rubber gasket is what keeps rain, wind and temperature swings out. A case that leaks turns a poster into papier-mâché within a week, and the damp stays inside long after the weather has passed. The key lock is what stops the case becoming somebody else’s poster site — on a public wall, an unlocked case is an invitation. Plexiglass matters for the same practical reason: it is shatter-resistant, which is why these cases are used on schools, public offices and businesses where a broken glass front would be a hazard rather than a repair.
Fix it to the wall at reading height for a standing adult, and check that the door has room to swing fully open before you drill — a case mounted tight against a downpipe or a corner cannot be opened far enough to change a poster without a fight. Under a canopy or an overhang the case will stay cleaner and the plexiglass will stay clearer, which is worth more than it sounds after a winter of road spray. The silver anodised frame is deliberately neutral and reads as part of the building rather than as a fitting bolted onto it.
