A table-top chalk stand is the smallest piece of signage there is, and the only one with no printing cost at all. It is written on with a chalk pen in the morning, wiped at night and rewritten tomorrow — a daily special, a table number, an allergen note, a price, a queue instruction. Anything that changes faster than a print run can keep up with belongs here.
Three sizes, and each one answers a different reading distance. A6 sits on a table and is read by someone already seated. A5 works on a counter, where the customer is standing at arm’s length. A4 is the one to choose when the message has to be read by someone still walking towards you. Getting this wrong is the common mistake: an A6 stand carrying the day’s specials at the door is invisible, and an A4 stand on a bistro table takes up the space the plates need.
All three are solid timber with a chalk surface on both faces, so one stand can carry two messages — the special on the approach side and the price or allergen note on the other, or the same message facing both ways down a counter. That doubles the useful stock: a set of ten stands covers twenty positions if you plan which face points where.
Use a liquid chalk pen. It gives a sharper line, holds legibility at distance and does not dust onto food or plates, which matters in any setting where the stand sits near what people eat. Clean with a damp cloth and let the surface dry before rewriting, or the next message smears. Timber and water do not mix indefinitely, so wipe rather than soak.
The stands are supplied plain. That is usually the point — the value is that content changes daily at zero cost. Where a fixed logo is wanted alongside the handwritten area, printed versions and branded covers are quoted separately.
