A wall-mounted wooden chalkboard is a framed chalk surface that carries today’s message and tomorrow’s without a print run. It is used for menus, daily offers, staff notices, room lists and anything else that changes faster than printed signage can keep up with, in restaurants, cafes, shops, offices, schools and event spaces.
Four sizes are stocked: S, M, L and XL. Choose by the wall and the reading distance, not by how much you intend to write. S and M suit a counter, a till point or a corridor where the reader is close and the message is short — a special, an opening time, a queue instruction. L and XL suit a wall people read across a room, and give room for a full menu or a week of notices without the writing shrinking to something nobody reads from the door. The frame is the same on all four sizes, so several boards in one space read as one system rather than as things collected over time. Where a room needs both a headline and detail, an XL for the main message with an S beside the till works better than one middle size trying to do both jobs.
Use a chalkboard where the content changes weekly or daily and the tone is meant to feel current. A printed sign that is out of date damages trust; a chalkboard that is out of date just looks like nobody has written on it yet. The other advantage is speed of correction — a price change, a sold-out dish or a room swap is handled in seconds by the person who noticed it, with no design step and no reprint. The limit is legibility. Handwriting is only as good as the person holding the chalk, so for anything that has to be read at speed or that carries a legal or safety message, print it.
Two habits make the difference. Rule the layout out lightly before writing, because a message that starts large and ends cramped is what makes a board look amateur. And test whatever you write with in a corner first: liquid chalk markers give a brighter line than stick chalk but can ghost on some surfaces, and finding that out on the whole board is an expensive way to learn it.
