Description

Magnetic sheet is what turns a printed graphic into a sign that goes on a van door in the morning and comes off before the vehicle is sold. Same material, cut to a shape, is also what makes a fridge magnet or a swappable panel on a steel display.

Which one

Thickness decides whether the sign stays on. Use 0.5 mm for indoor work, fridge magnets, steel boards and anything that never moves fast. Use 0.85 mm for vehicle doors and anywhere wind or speed will try to lift an edge. Width decides waste: 620 mm covers most door panels and craft work, 1050 mm is the one to take when the graphic is wider than a door. Buy by the metre for a single job, take the full roll when the same size repeats, because the metre price falls sharply. Printable A4 sheets are a different product, a matt coated magnet you run through a laser or inkjet printer for short runs with no laminating step. Magnetic tape is for edges rather than faces: a strip on the back of a light board, a removable label rail on a steel shelf, a frame that has to click into place.

Print on vinyl and laminate before applying to the sheet, or print the coated side directly. Round every corner by at least 5 mm. Square corners are where a vehicle magnet starts to peel.

Common questions

Which thickness for a van door?

0.85 mm. A 0.5 mm sheet will hold at a standstill and lift at motorway speed, especially at the leading edge.

Does it damage paint?

Not the magnet itself. Damage comes from grit trapped underneath. Take the sign off once a week, wash both the panel and the door, and dry them before it goes back on.

Can I print on the sheet directly?

Only the printable A4 sheets are coated for a printer. The roll material is meant to be covered with printed vinyl, which also gives you a laminate over the ink.
