Shop windows are the one surface you are never allowed to drill. A suction cup is how a sign gets onto glass and comes off again without a mark, and the only thing that matters is choosing the fitting that matches how your sign is made.
A hook cup is for anything with a hole or a loop already in it, a hanging tab, a cord, a light board. A screw cup goes through the sign itself, so it holds a rigid panel flat against the glass with no movement, which is what you want for acrylic and foam board. A ring cup takes a cable tie or a cord and suits a sign that has to hang a set distance below the cup. The media clip cup grips the edge of a poster or a thin panel directly, so nothing has to be punched at all. Size follows weight, not sign size: 20 mm for a light card, 30 to 40 mm for normal poster work, 50 mm when the panel is heavy or the glass is cold and sweating. The 90 degree sign holder is a different animal, a small cup with an arm that carries a price card out at right angles from the glass.

On clean glass a 40 mm cup carries a light poster and its board without trouble. For anything heavier than a few hundred grams use two cups at the top corners rather than one in the middle.
Almost always dust or a film on the glass, or a cold window with condensation behind the cup. Clean the glass with alcohol, let it dry, press the cup firmly and push the air out from the centre.
No. The surface has to be smooth. Frosted, sandblasted and heavily coated glass will not hold a cup for long.
