Rope and post is the slow, formal cousin of the retractable belt. It takes longer to reconfigure and it reads as an occasion — hotels, galleries, receptions, premieres, anywhere the barrier is part of the impression rather than only the function. These are the ropes, wall fittings and accessories that go with the posts.
A rope is a fixed length, so a rope run has to be planned: the posts stand where the rope reaches. A retractable belt pulls out to suit the gap and is far quicker to change, which is why belts win in an airport and ropes win in a lobby. Both clip onto the standard post head, so one run can mix them — rope where the public sees it, belt around the corner where it only has to work.
Velour rope is soft-finished and the usual indoor choice; twisted rope is heavier and reads as more traditional. Colours run black, burgundy, blue and purple. Black is neutral and safe in any interior, burgundy is the hotel and theatre default, and blue and purple are brand decisions that should be judged against the carpet rather than against a screen. End locks come in chrome or gold — match them to the post finish and to the ironmongery already in the room. Mixed metals over a short run of posts look like a mistake even when nobody can say why.
Wall belt holders and wall-mounted retractable belts, with a red or a black belt, do the same job where a free-standing post would be in the way: a corridor, a lift lobby, a stair head. They also survive positions where a post gets knocked over nightly. The trade-off is permanence — they need fixing to the wall, and once fixed the queue runs where the wall says it runs.
