A sign spacer, or standoff, holds a glass or acrylic panel a short distance off the wall so the sign floats and throws a shadow line. This is the stainless steel version with a lock: a grub screw in the cap clamps the panel so the sign cannot be lifted off its fixings by hand. It is the difference between a reception sign and a reception sign that is still there on Monday.<\/p>\n
Two sizes are stocked. 13×20 is the smaller fitting and suits lighter acrylic panels, small plates, room signs and directory tiles where a large cap would dominate the sign itself. 18×20 is the heavier fitting for big panels and for glass, where both the load and the visual weight of the panel need a fixing that matches it. The usual mistake is choosing by taste rather than by panel: a heavy panel on undersized standoffs sags and stresses the drilled hole, and a small plate on oversized caps looks like hardware with a sign attached. Where several signs share one corridor, keep one size throughout so the wall reads as a system.<\/p>\n
A plain standoff relies on friction and gravity, which is fine in a private office and naive anywhere public. The locking screw is worth the extra step in schools, hospitals, town halls, transport buildings, student areas and any position at eye height in a space that is not supervised. It also helps outdoors and in busy corridors, where knocks and vibration slowly work an unlocked panel loose. Stainless steel is the sensible material in wet rooms, coastal sites, kitchens and entrances, where plated finishes eventually mark.<\/p>\n
Count fixings, not signs. Most panels take four, one near each corner, and large or heavy panels take more, so order by the number of holes in the drawing. Set the holes in from the corners far enough that the glass or acrylic is not stressed at the edge, and have the panel drilled by whoever cuts it. Glass in particular has to be drilled before toughening and cannot be corrected on site, so agree the hole positions and diameters before the panel goes into production, not on the morning of the installation.<\/p>\n
